Look down a list of the largest Russian companies and almost every name falls into one of three shapes. Each one signals something different about the company.
The state compound
Ros- plus a sector: Rosneft (oil), Rostelecom, Rosatom, Roskosmos. The prefix is short for Rossiya and signals state ownership or origin. Geographic prefixes work the same way: Severstal is “north steel”, Sibneft was “Siberian oil”.
The sector compound
A sector root plus a commercial suffix: Gazprom is gaz + prom, gas industry. Stroyinvest, Tekhservis, Agroholding, Neftekhim. This is the workhorse pattern for medium-sized Russian business, and it says exactly what the company does.
The single noun
Magnit (magnet), Vympel (pennant), Rubin (ruby), Zenit, Sputnik. Short, concrete, memorable. This is how Russian consumer brands and design bureaux name themselves, and it is the pattern that travels best abroad.

The Suffix Dates the Company
A name in -prom or -snab reads as Soviet-descended heavy industry. A name in -invest, -holding or -servis reads as 1990s privatisation. A single English-friendly noun reads as founded after 2005. If you are naming a fictional company, pick the suffix that matches when it was founded.

The form goes before the name and the name goes in quotation marks: ООО «Строймонтаж». Russian uses angled guillemets rather than English quotation marks, which is a small detail that makes a prop document look right.

Notice how literal they are. Russian corporate naming is descriptive rather than abstract — there is no Russian equivalent of Accenture or Verizon among the majors. A generated name that says what the company does is more authentic than one that sounds clever.
